  A New Generation of Leadership

May. 19, 2005 - Times-Georgian - Several candidates for statewide office participated in the recent Carroll County Democratic Party picnic. There were some of the usual suspects but also some fresh faces with fresh ideas. This is not a political endorsement but an introduction to one of those who has a definite Carroll County connection.

Shyam Reddy is a Carrollton native who was born at Tanner Hospital before being raised and educated in Dublin, Georgia. He is a graduate of Emory University with a Master’s in Public Health and a law degree from Georgia.

Mr. Reddy is running for the office of Secretary of State being vacated by Cathy Cox. The credentials he brings to the task are impressive. He is a corporate/securities lawyer for a large and prestigious international law firm. His knowledge and understanding of business and securities appears to be a perfect fit with the demands of the Secretary of State’s office. He also has a strong information technology background which is required to bring Georgia’s electronic voting technology and certification and licensing of the various professionals to the standard of excellence we should demand. Mr. Reddy understands that technology can move our state forward in terms of job and business creation, election reform, and investor protection.

In other states, individuals taking a licensing exam do so on-line and receive immediate pass/fail notification. In Georgia the wait between the exam and notification of results can be as long as two months. This is unacceptable in the twenty first century. This leaves both the individuals and organizations that might hire them in limbo until the results of the exam are known. This is an unnecessary expense to the individual, the organization, and our economy. It is also possible to use modern technology to more effectively enforce professional licensing standards.

We have all seen the ads that Cathy Cox ran warning seniors and others about investment fraud. Shyam has a plan to utilize the power of the Internet in providing timely and accurate information about investment scams to Georgia’s citizens.

At the time Georgia bought our current electronic voting equipment it was state of the art. Now, however, it is possible to obtain paper receipts which would be subject to an independent audit to ensure integrity in our vote counting process.

The Secretary of State’s Office also handles business incorporations. Again, technology can be used to make this a more efficient and less costly process. Mr. Reddy is a practical and innovative problem solver who grew up during the technology revolution and is well prepared to use the power of technology to benefit all Georgians.

Mr. Reddy helped found an organization called the “Red Clay Democrats” which is an organization dedicated to revitalizing participation in Georgia’s future. He typifies an ethic of hard work and believes in giving something back to the community. In many respects he is similar to Illinois Senator Barak Obama in the passion and zeal he brings to the task at hand. If Mr. Reddy is typical of the slate of candidates presented to the voters in 2006, it may well be another 140 years before our state government is again infested with Republicans.
