Shyam Reddy calls on Georgia to go further to fight election fraud
Sept. 21, 2005 -
ATLANTA - Shyam Reddy announced an important new proposal to give people confidence in Georgia’s voting process and to fight election fraud in Georgia. Reddy, calling into question Republican opponent Bill Stephens’ commitment to real election reform, said that creating a paper trail wasn’t enough to ensure a fair and accurate vote. As part of his platform, Reddy would implement a new plan to keep the voting system secure, accurately count every vote and enforce stringent certification in every single precinct.
“Too many voters’ voices go unheard,” said Reddy. “Introducing a paper trail is a step in the right direction, but we’ve got to do better to effectively preserve our right to vote, maintain the integrity of the ballot and fight election fraud. My plan will ensure that our voting process is secure and that every single vote is counted in every single precinct.”
As a leading lawyer with a background in elections and campaign finance law, Reddy believes that every Georgian’s vote must be counted fairly - not only should effective technology be deployed but adequate verification must be ensured. His plan would go further to:
Ensure that all paper receipts remain secure during the voting process by keeping all receipts under lock and key;
Protect against fraud by providing for independent third party audits;
Enforce a comprehensive manual recount system for every precinct if the paper results don’t match the electronic results.
Republican candidate for Secretary of State Bill Stephens recently drew fire from state civil rights groups after supporting the enactment of the new voter identification law. Among other things, the new law was criticized for disenfranchising thousands of voters and failing to tackle voter fraud in the absentee ballot process.
“The next Secretary of State must bring integrity to his critical duty to count each and every Georgian’s vote,” said Reddy. “I’m deeply committed to fighting voter fraud wherever it may occur and ensuring that each and every Georgian is given the opportunity to vote.”
