Reddy biggest fundraiser in Georgia Secretary of State race

Feb. 17, 2006 - News India Times - Shyam Reddy, the Democratic candidate for Georgia Secretary of State, says he has not only the highest amount of money for his campaign but even has significant Republican support.

The Democratic and Republican primaries are scheduled for July 18 and if Reddy wins the party's nomination, he will be on the ballot during the Nov. 7, 2006 general election.

By Dec. 31 last year, the most recent disclosure date for candidates in the running, Reddy told News India-Times he had raised $334,000 in cash and kind for 2005, and had $290,000 cash in hand. To add to it, his main opponent, State Senator Carol Jackson, has dropped out, brightening his chances against the remaining Democratic opponent, Decatur businesswoman Angela Moore.

Reddy, who has been campaigning since March last year when he declared his candidacy, says he has the largest number of contributors.

"We have doctors, lawyers, young professionals, people from all walks of life. Right now, I am taking one supporter and one dollar at a time. I have a broad base of supporters. I've got tremendous support from Republicans as well!" Reddy said. The Georgia primaries allow registered voters to walk over and vote for a candidate in the other party's primary, Reddy noted. But he is not banking on that.

"There will be a 20 percent swing vote in Georgia. Forty percent are Democrats no matter what. And 40 percent are Republicans no matter what," he analyzed. "My philosophy is to reach out to as many as I can of different persuasions. People who you might think will not vote for me, will," he claimed.

Currently, for the Secretary of State position, there are two Republicans fighting each other in the primaries - Fulton County Commission Chairman Karen Handel and State Senator Bill Stephens. Handel reported a little over $202,000 in hand and Stephens $155,000. And on the Democratic side, Moore reported $245,000, almost $45,000 less than what Reddy has in hand.

Born in Carrollton, Georgia, Reddy's hometown is Dublin. He got his bachelor's in Political Science from Emory University, a master's in Public Health from the same university, and a Law Degree from the University of Georgia. He is married to Renee, and the couple lives in Atlanta

A business lawyer in the Atlanta office of Kilpatrick Stockton LLP, Reddy has also been on the Board of The Indus Entrepreneurs, a mentoring group for South Asian American entrepreneurs. He helped found and currently serves on the Board of the Red Clay Democrats, a 1000+ member organization set up to encourage new generation of Democratic youth.
