The Candidate That Is Reddy
Jul. 6, 2006 -
Georgia Informer - Few candidates for Secretary of State have a resume like Dublin, Georgia native Shyam Reddy. With two degrees from Emory, one from the University of Georgia and a career as one of Atlanta’s leading attorneys you might think Reddy would have lost touch with the views of most Georgians. But nothing could be further from the truth. An interview with Reddy makes one thing clear: he’s running to protect and fight for all Georgians.
Reddy’s platform - fighting fraud and nursing home abuse and defending the right to vote – appears to be resonating. With a clear fundraising lead and endorsements from legislators like House Minority Leader Dubose Porter and Representative Alisha Thomas-Morgan, many are calling Reddy the leading candidate in the Secretary of State’s race.
Many are comparing Reddy’s charisma and leadership to Senator Barack Obama. Reddy’s platform indeed shows that he’s looking to affect real change. He wants to get tough on con-artists by imposing tougher penalties and setting up a toll free number to report fraud. “More and more honest Georgians are becoming victims of investment schemes,” says Reddy. “But when I’m done getting tough on fraud, scam artists will wish they had never heard of the State of Georgia.”
Voter intimidation and disenfranchisement are also vital issues for Reddy. “Too many Georgians are not being guaranteed their sacred right to vote,” he says. Reddy’s platform calls for stamping out voter intimidation and implementing a paper trail to ensure electronic voting machines are counting votes properly. In fact, attorneys at Reddy’s law firm were involved in challenging the recently passed voter identification law. Reddy knows the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and the US and Georgia Constitutions when it comes to defending the right to vote.
Reddy has equally comprehensive plans and credentials to crack down on abusive nursing home operators. “All our parents deserve a safe and respectable retirement, but sometimes they’re being taken advantage of. That’s got to stop.” Reddy’s plans include stiffer background checks for nursing home managers and greater oversight. “We’ve got to catch abusive nursing home managers within days, not weeks or months,” says Reddy.
With election day fast approaching, Reddy is working hard to maintain his campaign’s momentum through the July 18th Democratic primary. Considering his record of leadership, comprehensive policy proposals, and progressive vision for a better Georgia, that goal is well within reach.
