Secretary Of State Candidates On TV
Jul. 12, 2006 -
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution - The down-ballot secretary of state's race took to the airwaves this week with at least three Democratic candidates unveiling TV spots.
Atlanta lawyers Shyam Reddy and Scott Holcomb and state Rep. Gail Buckner of Jonesboro are running TV ads. Reddy's ads feature a voice-over by Atlanta singer-songwriter Shawn Mullins and a play on the candidate's last name: "Georgia's families are ready for Shyam Reddy --- a strong Democrat for secretary of state," Mullins intones. Reddy focuses on three policy areas related to the office: investment fraud, nursing home regulation and voting rights. The ad can be seen at www.shyamreddy.com.
Holcomb's ad focuses strictly on electronic voting. The ad shows receipts scrolling out of cash registers and ATMs, accompanied by the "Blue Danube Waltz." Holcomb, providing his own voice work, says, "We see receipts all the time. So why don't we see one when we vote?" --- a reference to the state's lack of a voter-verified paper audit trail. The paper trail would allow voters to review a hard copy of the selections they made on the electronic touch screen before casting their ballot. Holcomb appears at the end of the ad in a suit with the state Capitol in the background. "I'll fight for fair elections in Georgia as your next secretary of state." Holcomb's ad is available at www.scottholcomb.com.
Buckner is airing two separate ads, both of which capitalize on her 16 years in the Georgia House of Representatives. Buckner appears in one of the ads, saying, "After 16 years as a public servant in the Georgia Legislature, I have unique, hands-on experience. I can be effective the first day on the job." The ad shows Buckner working in the House chamber and walking the halls of the Capitol. She vows to protect Georgians against consumer and identity fraud, and protect voting rights.
Republican candidate Sen. Bill Stephens of Canton is airing radio spots, according to campaign manager Katie Grove. In the Atlanta area, they can be heard on news/talk station 640 WGST-AM and 104.7-FM The Fish, a Christian soft rock station, Grove said. Opponent Karen Handel has not aired radio or TV ads, according to her campaign.
