REDDY UNVEILS PLAN TO FIGHT FRAUD AND PROTECT GEORGIANS - Leading Candidate for Secretary of State Sees Tougher Penalties for
Scam Artists and Citizen Empowerment as Keys to Fighting Fraud
Jun. 1, 2006 -
Atlanta - Shyam Reddy, leading candidate for Georgia Secretary of State, today unveiled his plan to protect the investments and life-savings of hard working Georgians and seniors from fraud. Reddy is the only candidate with a strategy to step up Georgia’s battle against investment fraud by educating citizens about fraud and going further to find and punish scam artists. Under his plan, the Secretary of State’s office will aggressively identify, track, arrest, prosecute and out the criminals carrying out these schemes, and impose tougher penalties on the perpetrators.
“When I’m done implementing my strategy to get tough on fraud, scam artists will wish they had never heard of the State of Georgia,” said Reddy. “The reality is that every single year tens of thousands of honest, hard-working Georgians are becoming victims of investment fraud – sometimes losing their life savings to scams that are becoming more and more sophisticated. We have got to do better to educate and protect Georgians.”
Reddy’s four-point plan for fighting fraud includes:
• Creating Georgia’s first state-wide watchlist to identify individuals and entities that have engaged in investment fraud, exposing their practices and making it easier for Georgians to recognize these schemes before they become victims;
• Working with church leaders, doctors, lawyers, hospitals, nursing homes and other entities to develop an alert system to inform citizens about the latest investment scams and fraudulent business practices;
• Creating an emergency hotline – a 3 digit dialing number or toll-free telephone number - where citizens can report suspicious activity and check the legitimacy of their investment opportunities with a trained professional;
• Promoting legislation that imposes tougher penalties on the criminals responsible for investment scams and fraud and working with local law enforcement, the Attorney General, state regulatory agencies, and local DA’s to arrest and prosecute the criminals who engage in these predatory practices.
“The Secretary of State must protect Georgians against investment fraud,” said Reddy. “Whether its telemarketing fraud, internet fraud, or elder fraud, it’s time to take a tougher stand against these criminals by hunting them down and putting them behind bars.”
