REDDY ANNOUNCES PLAN TO PROTECT GEORGIA’S SENIORS BY CRACKING DOWN ON ABUSIVE NURSING HOME OPERATORS -
Leading Candidate for Secretary of State Outlines Keys to Protecting Georgia’s Public Health and Safety
Jun. 6, 2006 -
Atlanta – Shyam Reddy, leading candidate for Georgia Secretary of State, today announced his second major policy initiative in as many weeks. Reddy’s comprehensive plan to protect the public health and safety of Georgians includes several initiatives, but focuses on protecting seniors from unscrupulous nursing home operators. Reddy is the only Secretary of State candidate with a public health background and the first to announce specific plans to protect Georgia’s seniors, which include stiffer background checks for nursing home workers and greater oversight to detect and prevent abuse.
“This is an issue close to my heart,” says Reddy. “All our parents and grandparents deserve a safe and respectable retirement. The majority of nursing homes are run by dedicated, caring individuals, but that doesn’t change the fact that some licensed operators take advantage of the system. That’s got to stop.”
The Reddy plan will:
• Implement greater oversight to detect the three major causes and warning signs of nursing home abuse: inadequately trained staff, stressful working conditions and staff shortages and staff burnout;
• Push for more stringent staffing regulations to ensure adequate staffing at all Georgian nursing homes;
• Employ more thorough background checks for all nursing home administrator applicants;
• Enforcing more thorough and frequent training requirements so that nursing home staff are sufficiently trained to do their vital jobs;
“We’ve got to catch abusive nursing home managers within days, not weeks or months,” says Reddy. “My plan not only detects abuse, but proactively prevents it from occurring.”
Reddy’s comprehensive plan to protect public health and safety also includes streamlining the licensure system to provide better information to consumers and superior service to Georgia’s 380,000 licensed professionals. Reddy’s plan will expand e-government technology to make information about licensed professionals readily available online so that consumers can research key facts before contracting with a licensed professional. That same technology will grant Georgia’s licensed professionals the online access they need to conduct business in the state of Georgia as efficiently as possible while ensuring accountability, protecting citizens and promoting public health.
