  Reddy Unveils Proactive Plan for Election Reform - Leading Candidate for Secretary of State Announces Policies to Stamp Out Voter Intimidation, Ensure Accurate Vote Counts & Improve Voter Turnout

Jun. 14, 2006 - Atlanta - Armed with an expertise in elections and campaign finance law, Shyam Reddy, leading candidate for Georgia Secretary of State, today unveiled his third major policy initiative in as many weeks: a comprehensive Election Reform Plan to protect and defend each and every Georgian’s right to vote. Reddy’s unique plan to eliminate voter intimidation, ensure accurate vote counts, and improve voter turnout includes initiatives such as voter verified paper ballots, pre-certification audit processes, the implementation of comprehensive civics curriculums, and an online One Stop Voter Shop. Reddy’s Election Reform Package provides improvements, procedures and technological advancements to ensure that election results truly reflect the will of the people.

“It’s a shocking truth that many Georgians lack confidence in the elections process,” said Reddy. “Introducing a paper trail is a step in the right direction, but we’ve got to go further to preserve the vote by stamping out voter intimidation at the polls and being proactive with the paper trail and putting in place a pre-certification audit process. My plan to implement a voter verified paper trail coupled with a pre-certification audit will ensure that our voting process is secure and that every single vote in every single precinct is quickly and accurately counted on Election Day. In addition, by proactively policing the voting system on Election Day and providing folks with a confidential process in which to report voter intimidation, I will protect Georgians at the polls and work to stamp out any voter intimidation that may occur.”

Reddy’s Election Reform Package combines both technology and policy initiatives in order to:

• Stamp out voter intimidation;

• Strengthen security measures to ensure the integrity of our voting machines;

• Create voter verified paper ballots and a fully-auditable paper trail;

• Establish a pre-certification audit to make sure your vote is counted on Election Day;

• Prevent long voting lines and promote a longer early voting period;

• Create an online One-Stop Voter Shop where voters can learn about candidates and conduct other voter-related business; and

• Increase voter turnout by advocating for a more comprehensive civics/government curriculum in Georgia’s school system. Students who take civics and government with the right curriculum are up to 10 times more likely to vote when they turn 18 and continue voting thereafter.

Reddy’s plan aims to ensure public confidence in the elections process by making sure that voters have access to the polls and that their votes are counted on Election Day. Reddy’s plan also empowers voters by providing them with a comprehensive online tool that will allow them to view their ballot prior to Election Day and view bios, media clips, campaign disclosure reports, legislative history, etc. for a candidate in one user friendly spot. He also vows to fight to decrease wait time at the polls and to make the voting process more efficient by deploying more voting machines, increasing the number of polling locations available and working with the legislature to expand the early voting period. Also, Reddy believes that by promoting good citizenship in Georgia’s schools, Georgia’s children will be more likely to vote when they turn 18. Reddy believes that by making our elections more efficient and more accessible, Georgia will experience greater voter participation and a strengthened democratic process.
