Statement by Shyam Reddy, Leading Candidate for Georgia Secretary of State, concerning this morning’s report that 675,000 registered Georgia voters could be disenfranchised because of a lack of proper photo ID
Jun. 20, 2006 -
Atlanta - “The disenfranchisement of more than 675,000 registered Georgia voters is entirely unacceptable. Every single Georgian has the constitutionally guaranteed right to vote and no law should be able to take that away. The Voter ID law does exactly that, however, and will result in registered voters being turned away at the polls this July. As a candidate for Secretary of State, I stand firmly against this misguided legislation.”
“Not only is the Voter ID law a slap in the face to our democratic process, it’s clear that Georgia is not even prepared to implement it before the July 18th primary. It is also clear that the Voter ID law discriminates against very specific segments of the population. We cannot let political expediency dictate who can and cannot participate in our democratic process. We must implement real solutions to prevent fraud without disenfranchising hundreds of thousands of people. Securing our right to vote is too important to do anything less.”
“This report underscores why the Voter ID Law must be repealed immediately. The disenfranchisement of even one voter is unfortunate, but the disenfranchisement of 675,000 is simply inexcusable.”
