REDDY CALLS ON OTHER SoS CANDIDATES TO ENDORSE VOTING RIGHTS ACT
Apr. 4, 2006 -
Atlanta – Shyam Reddy, leading candidate for Georgia Secretary of State, today called on his Republican and Democratic opponents to strongly endorse the renewal of the Voting Rights Act. Reddy is the only candidate with a crystal clear position on the legislation which strengthens democracy in Georgia. His position is in contrast to one Republican opponent who has expressed serious reservations about the necessity of the renewal.
“Our state has one of the proudest histories of civil and voting rights – and as candidates for Georgia’s Chief Elections Officer we must all agree to support the Voting Rights Act and show America that Georgia is at the forefront of voting rights,“ said Reddy. “Every candidate must immediately make their positions clear on this legislation that has been the source of so much progress and necessary protection.”
As a leading lawyer with a background in elections and campaign finance law, Reddy believes the Voting Rights Act is critical to Georgia’s democratic process because it underscores the importance of democracy by protecting our right to vote. The pre-clearance process and other sections of the Act that are set to expire do not place an undue burden on the state. In fact, they provide citizens with the confidence we deserve that our voting rights are being protected. Unfortunately, Bill Stephens, a Republican opponent, recently stated that he had doubts about the nature of the Act.
“I strongly believe in legislation that protects our rights, and that includes the Voting Rights Act. Over the last several decades the Act has been reauthorized by Republican and Democrats alike, underlining that partisan posturing has no place in this debate.” said Reddy. “Bill Stephens - and all my opponents - must appreciate the importance of this Act and its meaning for the millions who have been able to justly exercise their vote because of it.”
More on Shyam Reddy
Shyam Reddy, the leading candidate for Georgia Secretary of State, is a new brand of Southern Democrat. A fiscally conservative, socially responsible candidate, Reddy believes Georgians want a new generation of leadership with experience and determination to get the job done. He wants to build upon the success of Cathy Cox by implementing his innovative plan to secure voting rights, fight fraud, and promote economic development and job creation.
