REDDY BLASTS GOVERNOR FOR SIGNING PARTISAN REDISTRICTING BILL
Mar. 2, 2006 -
Atlanta – Shyam Reddy, leading candidate for Secretary of State (Chief Elections Officer) in Georgia, today denounced Governor Perdue’s signing of the controversial redistricting plan drawn up by GOP lawmakers. The plan redraws district lines to favor Republican candidates by splitting the traditional Democratic stronghold of Athens-Clark County into two Republican friendly districts.
"This is yet another example of career politicians looking out for their own interests. Governor Perdue has decided that his Republican friends in the Georgia House and Senate were more important than Georgia voters,” said Reddy. “It’s time to usher in a new generation of leadership that will represent the people and not the powerful.”
Governor Perdue, immediately after signing the bill, contradicted himself by signing an executive order creating a task force to study non-partisan ways to adjust legislative lines in the future.
“If the Governor was truly concerned about finding non-partisan ways to redraw district lines, he would have vetoed the legislation,” said Reddy. "This was clearly a ploy to cloud the issue and take attention away from the undemocratic result that signing this bill creates."
